Korea at bottom in smart-phone access
Complaints from Korean tech buffs and early adopters are growing due to resentment that foreign and domestic mobile phone manufacturers either do not release their new smartphones to the Korean market, or they make a belated entry.
Industry sources said yesterday that it takes between six to 12 months for local distributors like SK Telecom to distribute foreign brands - rationalizing the delay under the pretext of adopting localized marketing and studying the success rate of the product.
The BlackBerry smartphone, developed by Canada's Research In Motion Ltd., is now widely used in North America and Europe, but eager Korean consumers have had to wait for about a year.
RIM launched the BlackBerry Bold for corporate use in August 2008 to its home market, and although the product was launched in Korea through SK Telecom for corporate use in December, the smartphone was not available to mass consumers until the end of last month.
The continual dominance of home-grown brands - LG and Samsung - has led some observers to suspect the two conglomerates of restricting sales of foreign brands in their sales shops. Foreign players such as Nokia and Motorola have also been struggling to successfully penetrate the Korean market.
But local experts such as SK Telecom said lack of service support by telecommunications companies in the Korean market could be to blame for the delayed entry. They stressed the need to conduct thorough market research in order to gauge the success rate of the product in order to minimize risk.
According to industry sources, RIM plans to begin selling its latest BlackBerry 9630 model, which was launched last month, to the Canadian and American markets on July 12. However, Korea has been excluded from the list of launch countries. The Sony Ericsson X1 smartphone introduced in February 2008 entered the U.S. and 35 European markets in November that year, but it took four months before it was introduced in Korea through SK Telecom.
Meanwhile, the "Touch Diamond" smartphone launched by Taiwan-based HTC in May 2008 made it to Korea in March 2009. The "Touch Diamond 2" model rolled out earlier this year is expected to first reach the Singapore market next month.
But local players like Samsung Electronics have also been placing Korea at the bottom of its launch priority list. Industry sources say Samsung has launched as many as 11 smartphones in foreign markets, while it has launched only six of them in Korea.
Samsung's "Omnia," which was unveiled in Singapore in June 2008, was not available to Korean consumers until December.
Samsung Electronics said that differences in marketing strategies in each country could affect the timing of new product launches.
To date, about 10 smartphones have been introduced to the Korean market, with accumulated sales estimated at about 200,000 phones which is low considering that smartphones accounted for 15 percent of the first-quarter global mobile phones sales.
