actually the cross hatch is very important. The angle of the cross hatch determins how much oil is retained on the cylinder wall. Too horizontal an angle and the rings could never seat, always floating over an oil film; too stepe an angle and the oil all drains off and the rings and cylinder wall erode away quickly.
At 800 miles you have one of two problems, the machine shop that did the engine honeing used too fine a stone and "polished" the cylinders, or you have repeatedly fuel washed the cylinders and have simply worn it all away. You hear tail of how engines are torn down after 300,000 miles and there is still cross hatching in the bore. Ford hones the cylinders with a pretty aggressive stone, leaving some of the deepest cross hatch cuts in the industry. Your standard Chevy assembly mill is likly to polish the cylinder with a real fine stone, and remove your oil retention capability.

I had an engine with 125k miles and it looked almost brand new when it was torn down. The oil was changed every 3,000 miles(dino oil) and was tuned up and service regularly.Having the cross hatch still showing was great..thats a sign the engine was treated properly and not wearing down t a faster rate.
