蘭嶼位在東經121.3度、北緯22度
即台東東南方65公里的海面上
是一座丘陵起伏的火山島，滿潮時面積46平方公里，周圍長約38公里。
島的西北方岩石暴露，在夕陽餘暉中，遠望猶如紅色人頭，因此古名紅頭嶼。
光復後，以島上盛產蝴蝶蘭，改名蘭嶼。
蘭嶼多風，冬季季風狂吹，夏秋又多颱風
因此海岸遭受劇烈的波浪侵蝕，形成許多海蝕地形
有屹立的海蝕崖、海蝕洞，以及奇形怪狀的巨大岩塊
如坦克岩、雙獅岩等。
島的四周大多被隆起的珊瑚礁環繞
呈現裙礁的地形景觀。
全島最高峰紅頭山坐落在島中央，高約548公尺
其他如殺蛇山、青蛇山、大森山都在500公尺以下。
島上溪流呈放射狀水系，自四方流下
海岸附近的狹小平原，才是人們活動的主要地方。
重要的村莊在北海岸有朗島，東海岸有東清、野銀
西海岸有椰油、漁人、紅頭村等。
本島是雅美族的居住地，日據時代未經開發
因此還保有原始的生活方式
成為人類社會學以及生態學研究者的注目焦點...

前往旅遊要切記
從台東前往蘭嶼只有兩個途徑
坐客輪要2.5小時，且要注意是否有東北季風
如要搭飛機，記得先訂好來回的機票
