AT&T Wireless to Shut Down CDPD Network
AT&T Wireless plans to shut down its eight-year-old Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD) network by 2004, a company spokesman said. The network transmits data at about 19.2 kbps. AT&T Wireless' new General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) network transmits data at speeds ranging from 40 to 60 kbps. The company is scheduled to stop selling CDPD service in March 2003, and close the network by the end of the year. It will try to move customers to the higher-speed GPRS network.
