AT&T Wireless to Pay $2 Million Penalty for E-911 Delay
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AT&T Wireless has agreed to pay a $2 million settlement in a complaint by the Federal Communications Commission that the company missed key deadlines for deployment of technology to locate callers who dial 911 from cell phones. AT&T Wireless said delays from its equipment suppliers caused it to miss the deadlines. The company will now use network-based Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) technology instead of combination cell phone/network-based Enhanced Observed Time Difference (EOTD) technology to provide location information. Cingular Wireless earlier said that it would stop taking shipments of EOTD technology. (Source: Reuters, Dow Jones Newswires, CNET News.com)
