Talking about the price, $199 + 2 year $30 data plan (voice plan excluded) = $199 + 30 x 24 (not including tax!) = $910 is not cheap at all. I could buy a refurbished ATT tilt for $150 (new ATT tilt is only $450) w/ two year voice contract only, no need to have to pay $30 data plan, or I could use the $15/mon media net unlimited plan)

i don't know if you did take the math class in college before, but i am sure you don't know the market well enough to say so. When you purchase a ATT tilt, you can't go with media net unlimited plan since it was not provided for smart phone. you have to go with "PDA Personal" which has Unlimited data usage for PDAs and Smartphones. that's $30.00/month.

and you are comparing ATT tilt and iphone? sure. both of them have the same data plan price. so the difference between those two will be the price of the cell phone. oh wait. 199+ 30x24 + tax and 399 + 30x24...

let me do the math. YOU ARE WRONG. Gosh.

Oh wait..i guess you don't know AT&T will soon stop sharing monthly revenue with Apple. HUH..so how can you add all the crap fee from ATT ?

since HTC can't compete with the price. Please let me know if tilt can browse the internet with the same functions and speed that iphone provides. Do the research before telling some jokes please.

The Tilt is going to look bad if the Pocket IE is used for comparison.
Speed wise (which is what being discuss on the topic), pocket ie on HTC's stock Wm6.1 rom is not that bad. (not to mention Tytn II has countness unofficial rom which run even smoother than stock)

But as for iPhone 2G, the EDGE plan is NOT a must. You can remove the data plan on AT&T site anytime.

Plus, Media Net has its limit. It’s not using the native browser of the phone nor it allows full Internet access.

It’s not the kind of package that equals to the phone data package.

And as for refurbished good, the iPhone 2G was available for $249 too. The iPhone 3G will have refurbished unit once the returns generated is enough.
I don't own the 1st generation iPhone but if I remember correctly, a $60 voice + data 2 yrs plan was a MUST to activate the iPhone w/ ATT. And you CANNOT remove the plan (unless you pay the penalty) since ATT don't allow downgrade the plan w/ the contract (upgrade is allow).

As for media net, you are not "officially" to use this plan for PDA phone. But you could use it without problem. For user, there is NO DIFFENENT between media net and pda data plan. It's just how ATT get more $$$ from user. I've been using this for 2 yrs. Everything (web browsing, VPN, VNC ....etc) just working w/o issue. And it has been discuss on xda-developers as well.

As you stated, refurbished iPhone is still $100 more than Att Tilt.

YES, YOU CAN.

As for the media net "trick", that's like using a loophole.
Even iPhone could do that.

T-mobile users could also enable full access on iPhone while paying for the $5.99 T-Zones only.

I Googled this.
http://www.pocketables.net/2007/12/mobile-web-spee.html

If iPhone 3G is indeed 2X EDGE speed, that doesn't look good for Pocket IE.

Although I do wish to mention both EDGE and HSDPA network of AT&T is quite under-speed.

When I was in Hong Kong, I was able to get a stable 160kbit/s in average to 200kbit/s in good signal area. HSDPA speed is frequently over 700kb to over 1mbits.

Sure I did take math in college since I do have an MS degree on Computer Engineer at San Jose and BS Computer Science degree in UC San Diego.

Yes, you cannot use media net w/ ATT tilt "officially". But you could do that yourself online to go w/ media net plan, which basically the same w/ PDA Personal (except the price). I've (and others) has been using this w/o problem.

Therefore, yr math is not wrong. But my math is not wrong either. It's just happen you are not educated enough to know there are choice and alternative.

Therefore, iPhone is the one that can't complete w/ the price. PIE may not provide comparable functions as iPhone browser. But I don't believe it will slower than iPhone at all. Not to mention we do have a lot of choice such as netfront, skyfire, opera, picsel ...etc which provide comparable (maybe better compatibility) browser on WM platform

Yes, I do admit PIE is outdated and slow, plus Tytn II WM6.0 is well known for graphic and display problem (which is fixed partially w/ latest 6.1 update). And that's why IE still can beat iPhone badly w/ non graphic heavy site and not so good on youtube etc. But as the benchmark show clearly, Tytn II w/ better browser like Opera beat Edge iPhone badly on all tests (mostly 3 to 5 times faster)

Let's go back to the topic. Based on what we've been discussed, Peron is right on Steve Job is unfairly using the outdated and under-perform Treo 750 to compare since they could have something better to compare w/.

I don't think that's an unfair.

As I have already explained.

It's about the target customers, potential customer base.

It's not a CNET.com review or Toms' Hardware Guide Benchmark; it's an Apple event.

And we all know the marketing practice. If you want to complain about this, almost every comparison Ad anywhere is your target.

RoadRunner vs AT&T DSL; Cable vs AT&T advance TV; MPG ratings of cars, too much to mention.

Oh i see..you are comparing the plan which is not "officially" allowed?

Oh my god, what a shame for UCSD. I don't know what does your college teach you in life, and you are so proud of yourself for use a plan which is not officially allowed? like trying to find some holes in the law?

ATT has the right to discontinue providing service to you and charge you a freaking bill for abusing the "plan" you use on a smartphone if they want to.

I don't know what the heck are you thinking, but you are comparing something which is "official plan" and "unofficial plan"? How fair is that? LOL...

It's useless to talk to you since

1. you can't do the math

2. you are trying to talk about something not "officially" allowed.

Maybe few people had found the trick to get a cheaper price like you, but sadly, there are more iphone users there. It won't be like a small deal like you abusing the service plan.

hey, be cool honeydanny san
we just want to discuss ideas, don't make personal attack

I do agree with Raymond Lui
although I have left the US for a while already, I am pretty sure not many ppl use what you use.
therefore, It's hard to make the comparison and good persuasion for most users.
