Broadcom Corp. introduced Monday new Wi-Fi chips for notebooks that combine 802.11 standards and reduce power consumption.
The Broadcom AirForce BCM4306-M chip can help extend battery life in a typical Pentium M notebook, while transefering data at a rate of 54Mbps, company officials said. The AirForce BCM430x-M baseband processors enable PC manufacturers to add 802.11g and 802.11a/g wireless connectivity without adversely affecting battery performance.
Broadcom's M-series chips draw 75 percent less power than other wireless technology and typically consume less than one minute of the overall life of a notebook battery, officials with the Irvine, Calif.-based company said. The M-series products are meant to complement the low-power features of other mobile processors, including the Pentium M, Pentium 4-M, the Mobile AMD Athlon and the Transmeta Crusoe processor.
